Windows 8/8.1 No Audio – “Endpoint is a duplicate” error message. (Part 2/2

noaudio
So this is part two of a solution that I had to discover on my own after hours and hours of searching for the answer to a problem that had a very obscure solution. [ See Part 1 here. ]

So after the first fix which was repairing the netprofm service in the registry, I was left with no audio.  When attempting to start the Windows Audio service, I got the error very vague message of  “Endpoing is a duplicate.”  So I searched through the services in the registry looking for something in the AudioSrv key that may be causing the problem.  I noticed two keys which were “AudioEndpoingBuilder” and “AudioSrv”.  Everything seemed to be correct except for one thing.

(UPDATE 4/20/2015: For an automatic fix, look below at the bottom of this post for download links and an explanation on my registry exports.  No knowledge of the registry is required.)

For the manual fix and details, read on…

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> AudioEndpointBuilder -> Parameters

Check the ServiceDLL data, on the problem system it was:

%SystemRoot%\System32\Audiosrv.dll

It should be:

%SystemRoot%\System32\AudioEndpointBuilder.dll

There didn’t seem to be any problem with the AudioSrv -> Parameters -> ServiceDLL data as it was already set to it’s correct value of :

%SystemRoot%\System32\Audiosrv.dll

So if yours is off, I would go ahead and change it.

After a reboot of the system, all sound was back and the services were started with no errors.

I have, as of writing this later, come across these combined problems twice now.  The first time took me hours if not a couple days to finally discover these solutions.  The second time I knew exactly what to check.

Both computers where Dell systems.  One was a laptop, one was a desktop.  Both were lower end consumer grade desktops.  Not sure what models.  I don’t really know what software was in common.  I wish I had taken a log of both systems to compare any similarities.  If you end up finding this useful, try to grab some information so we can attempt to track down what is causing this odd change in these two keys.  I have a feeling it may be something to do with the factory image they use when creating these particular problematic systems.  Possibly a bad driver or update that was pre-installed.

Anyways, I hope this helps someone else as it has me on two occasions so far.  Please feel free to comment.

UPDATED 4/20/2015: I have been asked to provide further information on how to edit the registry.  My stuff on here is for self-help techies with the assumed knowledge of what I know.  However, for those that may need help in editing the registry, I’m attaching registry exports that you can execute to automatically fix the registry keys mentioned in both of these posts.  I’ve included an export of each of the mentioned keys as well as one combined export.  It honestly won’t hurt anything to run the combined file regardless if you only need on or both fixes, but if you prefer to only fix one of them at a time, go ahead and download the individual keys.  To use the downloaded files, just save the REG file to your PC and then just run it like a normal setup file.  You may want to disable your antivirus.  You may also receive a UAC prompt asking for permissions to make changes to your system, you want to be sure to allow this change.  You will most definitely then receive a message from Registry Editor warning you about changing or deleting values in the registry, click Yes to continue.  You should then relieve a message that the registry key was added successfully.  After applying either of these registry keys you will need to reboot your computer.

Keep in mind, after making these registry changes, you may still have issues that this fix just isn’t the root of.  I can’t provide Much else tech support via these forums, but if you have issues running the registry export, then post on here and I’ll try and help you out a bit more with my fix.

  4. I really can’t thank you enough for this!
After restarting my computer today because AVG asked me to I suddenly had these problems, but this combined with a huge dip in performance and my laptop barely booted anymore. System restores didn’t work no matter what I tried and I was beyond hope seeing as I had an exam tomorrow and I study off my laptop. You truly are a life saver!
Threw AVG off my computer, used your registry and it’s running like a charm again.

  5. Hi I am just posting to say that these fixes both worked on my home built PC. I believe that it has something to do with AVG, as I read that it may be the cause of the problem stated in part 1, and the fact that my PC is not made by any one company I doubt it has to do with any one brand etc.
    Cheers!

  6. JOSH!!!! Iknow i speak for all past and future when i say thank you SO VERY MUCH!! I have been using computers all my life and consider(ed) myself to be a decent troubleshooter but this had me PSYCHO. your combined fix solved both problems and i cant thank you enough. 8. Thanks a lot for your help. I was struggling to repair the audio issue, although the Audiosrv was enabled, but the registry check was a great help.
Now I can peacefully listen, and everything is functioning in sync.
    Thanks a lot.

  9. hi Josh! My audio still not working “The Audio Service is not working”. i follow the steps you mentioned above, i did it 3 times but still my audio not working. i also tried to update the software latest version IDT High Definition Audio Codec Ver. 6.10.6491.0 but nothing happened The Audio Service is not working. do you have any idea for this? pls help me. Thanks in advance…

  10. Hello, I’m not sure if I should post this here or of there is a forum you check but I have been having a similar problem though it may actually be a different thing. My control panel hangs like you described in the first part and my audio isn’t working, though I’m not sure about the error messages you described because I don’t know where to find them (I’m not very tec savvy). But I’m also having another problem on top of it. My AVG antivirus software will not work. It won’t run when the system starts up and when I go to its folder and try to run it nothing will load. I read somewhere else that it might be malware or virus so I tried downloading a different antivirus software but this one couldn’t install for some reason. I made the changes in the registry you talked about and rebooted the system but it still hasn’t solved any of my problems. I’d greatly appreciate any help.

    1. Try uninstalling AVG (if still installed) and reinstalling. I got no results from any of the other fixes until I reinstalled AVG (see my lengthier comment below).

  11. Hi josh, thx a lot for your posting.
I had to apply both of your indications
    – %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\netprofmsvc.dll
    -%SystemRoot%\System32\AudioEndpointBuilder.dll
after that finally my windows 8 worked.

  12. Thx! I have no idea what kind of sorcery was that, but the download solved the non-responding control panel and my no-audio issue. However, my audio volume is very low compared to what it used to be… Oh well… Can’t have it all right? At least I can listen to things again 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Try this:
Right click on your volume icon in the system tray and select “Playback Devices”. In the list of playback devices, look for the one with a green checkmark that says “Default device” or “Default playback device”. Select it and then click on the Properties button in the bottom right corner.
Now go to the Enhancements tab. Make sure “Disable all enhancements” is not checked. Then look in the list of enhancements for “Loudness Equalization” and check it off to enable it. You can click on preview to hear an immediate sample. Apply the new settings and then click OK on the remaining windows. Let me know if that increases your volume. I’ve had to do it after some fresh reloads and the sound is quieter than it was before. Don’t know if there is a better fix, but this seems to usually work.

  13. Hey Josh, mine still says “End Point is Duplicate” . if you make a video! It would be really helpful for all of us! I couldn’t understand the parameter section you mentioned above!

    1. Just download the combined.reg file at the end of my second part post. Right click on the file and select save or save link as in order to save it, left clicking usually just loads the text of the file in your browser. After you download the file, double click on it to import the registry keys. They are default keys, so if they aren’t broke on your PC, nothing will change. However, if that is the problem then after a reboot you should see things resolved. You never even have to look in the registry.

  14. OMG this is awesome! You’ve fixed my problem in no time. I just got my new desktop today and was so worried that I would have to send it back to due faulty audio!! Thank you!!

  15. I just wanted to say thank you for your post regarding this audio issue. You findings were correct and solved the issue I was fighting with, and while I can navigate the registry easy enough, the .reg files make life easier yet. Hope you are well, and continue your work.
